Wool Coat OEM in China: A Practical Sourcing Guide for Fashion Brands

Materials, MOQ, sampling timelines and how to vet a wool coat manufacturer, written for brands building their first or next outerwear program.

China remains one of the most capable places in the world to develop and produce wool coats, from hand-finished double-faced wool to wool-cashmere blends and tailored worsted outerwear. But finding a factory and finding the right factory are very different things. This guide walks through what buyers should know before they brief a supplier, so the first sample lands closer to the coat you actually want.

Why source wool coats from China

Chinese outerwear hubs, especially Guangzhou and the Yangtze River Delta, combine mature fabric markets, experienced pattern makers and flexible production that handles both small trial runs and large seasonal orders. For a new brand, that means you can develop a coat properly without committing to container-scale volume.

  • Mature material access: wool, cashmere, blends and trims are sourced close to the factories.
  • Flexible order sizes: many makers support low minimums for first seasons.
  • Full development: in-house pattern making and sampling shorten the loop from idea to wearable sample.

Know the materials before you brief

A wool coat is only as good as its cloth. The two categories buyers ask about most are double-faced wool and wool blends.

Double-faced wool

Double-faced wool is two layers woven together and finished so the coat needs no lining. Edges are turned and hand-finished. It feels luxurious and drapes beautifully, but it is construction-heavy: it rewards factories with real hand-finishing skill and disciplined quality control. If you brief double-faced wool, ask specifically about finishing, pressing and edge consistency.

Wool blends and wool-cashmere

Blends, for example wool with a small cashmere or polyamide content, are common for price, durability and hand-feel. They are easier to cut and sew at volume, but composition directly affects warmth, pilling and how the coat ages. Always confirm the exact composition and request a swatch before sampling.

MOQ, sampling and lead times

Numbers vary by factory, but here is a realistic range for a flexible developer-producer rather than a mass-scale mill:

Minimum order

From around 100 pcs per style and color for flexible programs

Sampling

About 2 to 3 weeks from an approved brief

Bulk lead time

About 6 to 9 weeks after pre-production approval

Development

Pattern, prototype and material sourcing handled in-house

Treat these as planning figures, not quotes. Fabric availability and order complexity move the timeline.

How to vet a wool coat manufacturer

Before sending a tech pack, check a few things that separate a capable partner from a trading middleman:

  • In-house pattern and sample room, so the people who develop the coat stay close to the people who make it.
  • Material transparency: they should name compositions, mills and show swatches.
  • Finished-goods quality control: ask how double-faced edges, buttonholes and linings are checked.
  • Communication: clear, documented replies beat fast but vague ones.
  • Openness to third-party inspection: a confident factory welcomes it.

What to prepare before you contact a factory

The faster and more accurate your brief, the faster your first sample. Bring as much of this as you can:

  • Tech pack, sketches or clear reference photos
  • Target quantity by style and color
  • Fabric direction, composition or swatches
  • Size range and target market
  • Delivery timeline
