The Art of Double-Faced Wool: Why True Luxury Cannot Be Machine-Made
A look inside the hand-stitched seams that give double-faced wool its lining-free finish, and why the last step still passes through a tailor's fingers.

If you look closely at a high-end double-faced wool coat, you will notice something missing: there is no lining. The rich texture of the wool shows on the outside, and the inside carries the exact same flawless finish. No raw edges, no visible stitching, no bulky seams. It looks effortless.
Ask any technical designer and they will tell you that this effortless look is the most labor-intensive process in outerwear manufacturing. At LGF Apparel, we believe true luxury cannot be rushed, and it often cannot be done by machine.
The challenge: you cannot just sew it
Double-faced wool is exactly what it sounds like: two layers of premium wool woven together, or bonded so closely that they behave as one cloth. Because it is thick and delicate at the same time, you cannot simply fold the edges under and run it through a standard sewing machine.
If you try, the result is a stiff, bulky seam that destroys the elegant drape of the coat.
To achieve the clean, seamless finish that European luxury brands expect, the garment has to be opened at the edges, split, and then carefully rejoined.
The solution: hand-stitching
This is where the human touch becomes irreplaceable. To close the seam while keeping the edge razor-sharp and invisible, our artisans use a traditional technique: hand-stitching, also known as blind hemming.
Watch closely. The tailor is not simply sewing. The needle lifts individual fibers from inside the cloth to lock the two layers together without piercing through to the face. The thread stays hidden between the layers, the edge stays flat, and the coat keeps its drape.
- Invisible seams: the thread is completely hidden between the two layers.
- Zero bulk: the edge stays perfectly flat and razor-sharp.
- Maximum drape: with no heavy lining or stiff interfacing, the coat moves naturally with the body.
Why we still do it by hand
A single high-quality double-faced wool coat can take a skilled artisan days to finish. In an industry that prizes speed, many factories have moved to machines or cheaper bonding methods.
We have not.
For our clients, including premium brands across Europe and the US, the integrity of the garment is everything. When a client receives our double-faced wool samples, they are not only looking at a coat. They are looking at the years of experience in our tailors' hands.
Whether the brief is a complex tailored coat or intricate knitwear, we believe the best quality comes from advanced machinery and irreplaceable human craftsmanship working together.
If you are developing premium outerwear
If you are looking for a manufacturing partner who still values the art of true garment construction, we should talk. We handle everything from premium double-faced wool to complex knitwear, produced to the standards the European market expects.
